Internet marketing is very different from regular marketing.  Business just in general is quite different on the internet.  The internet has a lot more of a network to it than it does a single-direction dictation.   You’ll have to account for this in all kinds of different ways and techniques.

On the internet your marketing is much more of a communicative process than a brute-force process.  It’s much more efficient and you’ll probably be able to make more money by yourself on the internet (if you’re smart about it) than you can working for a big company behind a desk or something– and it’s fun and exciting!  You’ll be part of the creative sphere!

You’re going to have to be able to work with people from a partnership-basis, rather than on an employee-basis.  The relationship between employee and employer on the internet is very different than it is in ‘real life’– on the internet, each worker you hire is probably only going to work with you as long as you provide the most value to them that they can possibly get, and you’ll only hire them as long as they actually make you some noticeable money; or help you get things done that you absolutely must.

Marketing is about communicating the value of your product to your desired market; and nothing more.  On the internet this is very simple.  It’s blog posts, YouTube videos,  Emails, Websites, SEO.  The text you are reading right now.  It’s everything you do on the internet that is centred around your business.

How to be good at SEO without being an expert

SEO is as complicated or as simple as you want it to be.

Search Engines are designed to do exactly what they’re supposed to do; they find the stuff you’re looking for and put it in front of your face.  And they do this through the use of words and key-terms.

Experts in SEO will of course always deliver crazy-good results that the layman wouldn’t ever be able to get a hold of themselves, but that doesn’t mean the average person with fingers, a keyboard, and an idea in their head can’t get pretty darn good at SEO just naturally.

It takes a bit of consideration on how SEO works fundamentally to write out really good content and make your site in such a way that fits what other people are going to be searching for.  This also depends greatly on the search engine that you’re optimizing for.  For example, Russia has its own primary search engine that has different rules.

Mostly though, just keep key words in mind and write content that will engage the people that you expect to go to your website.  Essentially, think of a search engine as a guy who has been to every corner of the internet and will recommend things to people depending on what they say they’re looking for.

As long as you keep that in mind, you should be able to write okay-content for your blog or independent website, and you should get decent search engine results.

SEO really just means Search Engine Optimization.  Some people are really good at SEO and offer their services to those who can afford it.  Others… not so much.  Which is a darn shame, since in essence it’s not that hard of a concept to grasp.  SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization.  So, for instance, here’s how Google kind of works in a nutshell. If you’re very insightful, you’ll notice that there’s a way for people to understand how this process works on a technical level, and then structure the content of their site in such a way that makes search engines go “Oh… this is nice!”– that’s one part of it; making sure your website looks good when search engines find it.

The other part is how to make your website look relevant to the searches that people are putting into these search engines.  You have to do this because even if your website is very good in its own regards, and it follows many of the rules to make it the top result on whatever text is relevant to it in search terms, if you pick a search term that only gets searched like three or so times a day by the whole world, you’re going to maybe get just those three or so people.

So to combat this… Know the trends. This is a fantastic resource to see what kinds of key-words people are searching for.  You’ll be able to test out and explore what gets traffic and what doesn’t.  This way, you’ll be able to know exactly what words are right to describe your content, and what words you should choose to semantically frame your website around.

If you’re constantly putting out content, you can easily just keep a few search terms that are relevant to the news.  Or at least the news according to search engines. –Which is what you’re going to get traffic from, anyway.

In the end, SEO isn’t about exploits; it’s more about working with search engines to do their job– which is to drive people who are interested in your website, to your website.  Namely there’s Google, so all hail our Googley overlords and their Google Penguin protocol.
